Trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is a fixed combination of two antimicrobial
agents—a diaminopyrimidine (trimethoprim) and a sulfonamide (sulfamethoxazole)—
purposely chosen to provide sequential and synergistic inhibition of bacterial folate
metabolism. Although a parenteral formulation of this combination is currently under
